Requirement
Nurse call systems enable a patient to summon a nurse. Typically a bell push button at the bed provides an indication at a nurse call station. There is usually a second button on the bed-head that enables a nurse to call for assistance. The requirements in a hospice are different from a care home or a large hospital and some of the features offered by suppliers may not be necessary.
Nurse call systems should be seen as part of an overall patient monitoring capability with the ability to detect that a patient has had a fall or fallen out of bed or opened the doors into the garden.
Staffing is also a key consideration. In a small unit it is not practical to always have a person at a nurse station so nurse calls should be relayed to pagers or smart phones using Wi-Fi.
Wired or Wireless
The choice between a wired and wireless nurse call system depends on factors like installation costs, building type, and maintenance requirements. Wired systems offer greater reliability and lower long-term maintenance, making them ideal for new constructions, while wireless systems provide faster, less disruptive installation and greater flexibility, which is beneficial for existing buildings.
